Gettin’ Phit Walking Contest

by Linda Carmical on January 21, 2010

Take a Walk, Get Some Exercise and Check Out America Right From Your Living Room!

This isn’t your usual walking contest…this one is virtual. What this means is you’ll walk in your home town and visit different places in the USA via the Internet along with other competitors. Each time you reach a designated mile marker you complete a milestone.

Starts —> February 1, 2010

~~~~~~~
What Does It Cost Me?
Not a dime!
The only cost is time, dedication, and a little sweat.
What’s in it for me?
  1. You’ll feel better.
  2. Your clothes will fit better.
  3. You get to share your experience with your Family, Phitter Phriends, Facebook Friends, Twitter Friends, Co-Workers, and everyone you know!
  4. There’s gratification of doing something good for yourself every time you hit a milestone!
  5. You get a Certificate for a great job & to let everyone know… YOU WALKED ACROSS THE USA!!
  6. If you are the first to reach the finish line, you’ll get a $10 Amazon.com gift card and a 1st Place Certificate!
How does it work?
For every 1 mile you walk it’s equal to 50 miles.
  • 5050 Miles from Delaware to California
  • 1 mile = 50 Miles
  • Total Miles Walked = 101
How will I keep track of the miles I walk?
  • You’ll be supplied with an interactive chart you need to log your progress and keep a record.
  • You’ll receive a chart listing the milestones and distances.
How to join in:
  1. First, if you’re going to want to use a Gmail email, before anything else set up a Gmail email account for yourself. (Any email will work for keeping a record of your miles walked and tracking.)
  2. Leave the comment “I’m In!” below.
  3. Complete this registration form.
That’s great! Think about taking this walk to reap the benefits of a group walk and learn a few things about the USA. Maybe the next competition could be a walk across Canada? If you are in, complete the registration form. :)
I’m in! I’ll be doing my miles on the treadmill at the gym in the AM. :)
I’ll be doing mine mostly on a treadmill too! This 56 degree weather we’re having in upstate NY isn’t going to last! Thanks for joining in!
I’m in!
However, I’m a little confused about how this is being done. Will we be walking on a treadmill in front of our computers and accessing a walking website of our neighborhood? Will our miles be logged using the honor system? Will we be walking on a bike path that shows mile markers? Please clarify.
Good luck to everyone! See you “on the road”!
-Phyllis
You won’t need to be in front of a computer. You can do this anywhere you want…in a gym, in your home, in your neighborhood. It’s all an honor system.
Once you reach a milestone you’ll have a link to see the place you virtually walked to and learn a few things about it if you want also. You’ll have more information soon.
Thanks for joining in!
I’m very anxious to see the route – been to a few states, Florida, NY, NJ, OH, PA. Need to ‘see’ more of the U.S.! And, I’m sure I’ll have to prepare a spreadsheet of some kind for myself too (yeah, I’m one of those).
I’ll have a really nice spreadsheet for you to go with your milestone list. You’ll have the in a couple of days. :)
Ooo… will our spreadsheets have a place to add photos? If I can get myself onto the bike path, or other outdoor areas, I’d love to be able to share my walks with the rest of you.
Linda Carmical January 27, 2010 at 3:14 pm
No, but you can Photoshop them and I’ll post them! That’s a great idea Phyllis!
