Phitness Contest Update 4/6/10

Just a quick post to provide a little information and hopefully collect some ideas & feedback from you guys for the next Phitness Contest.


  1. This fitness contest will be based on time.
  2. There will be a number of exercises to choose from.
  3. You’ll enter the amount of sweat time you worked your buns off.
  4. If you work out 3 times a day, you’ll be able to enter each session individually or you can tally ‘em up and enter the total …your call!
  5. The tracking system will be easy to use.
  6. You’ll have access to your record along with me so we can watch your progress together.
  7. Any documentation needed for the contest will be provided to you by me.
  8. More information will follow soon.

What I need from you:

  • Exercises you’d like to see in the list to choose from.
  • Ideas you may have about accountability. How do we prove our time(s).
  • What’s a good goal number of hours to sweat our buns off to? 100? Less? More?
  • What do you think of a small fee to go toward monetary prizes for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd places?
  • Should this one be free of charge like the last one? If so, what should the prizes be? Should there be prizes? IDEAS PLEASE! ;-)
  • I’ll be looking for guest bloggers for this contest. I want y’all to share your experiences along the way. Tips, struggles, what you’re doing, how you’re doing it, types of exercises, how you fit your exercises in, motivation & inspiration, meal plans, foods you’re eating, etc.! Let me know if you’re interested please!

I would love to participate, but will be unable if there is a fee.
I’m a SAHM that lives in a very rural area, so some exercises to choose from could be…
Time on Wii Fit
Workout DVD
Dancing with kids
walking (laps around yard)

Wii Fit and walking outdoors is what I do.
For the Wii Fit, I’d prefer to have one category of Wii Fit rather than break down to the five areas – balance, yoga, strength, aerobics and cos it will mean less math but up to you. If it’s broken down I doubt I will want the stress of breaking it down.

I’m happy blog if it’s not every day.
Definitely happy to share food ideas.

However, I don’t want too much duplication with Phitter and the other sites I am on (numerous!)

Being new to OL and not participating in the walking contest, did it last for a month? I think it would be fun to have a different workout each week. Yoga, pool workout, walking, bike etc. Other than the honor system, I’m not sure how you can keep people accountable. Maybe before and after photo’s, weight and body measurements? Yes there should be prizes!! What were the prizes for the last contest? I think you would get more people to participate if it were free. But I wouldn’t be opposed to a small fee. When will it start??

* The last contest lasted a little over a month.
* Great exercise choices.
* I like the before and after picture Idea (Depends on the # of hours we are sweatin’ toward! 50 hours may not make sense but if 100 or 300 it might work!) I definitely want to include weight and body measurements so we’re thinking alike there!
* I love prizes too. The last prize was a $10.00 Amazon Gift Card. It was small but it came out of my pocket & doing the contest was for fun, motivation, & inspiration. I was thinking a very small fee ($5 or $7) from everyone would allow more exciting prizes. But, I’m not sure if everyone would have a PayPal account, so I may need to save it for the next one. Everyone would know how many people so that makes me accountable for the amount of $$ collected. (trust factor)*
* It will start within the next 2 weeks.

I am definitely down for donating for the prize that would be really motivating and before and after pics and measuring sounds perfect too!

I love this idea. I have the wii…it would be great if we used wii fit plus to set up routines that we can follow etc. that would be cool. I am certainly not a workout enthusiast so I would need help and direction on any exercises that aren’t laid out for me. lol Also, there could be a step counting exercise for the walkers in this situation.

I think this is great fun! I love competition.

Hi Linda,
I signed up for your challenge and I used my google group info so i’ll be WeGetPaidToEat! Hope it won’d be confusing. On Phitter, it’s just donnaweathers!
I’d love to participate in your challenge but like some of the others, I’m a single mom and if there is a fee, I probably couldn’t do it. Prises really don’t matter to me either. Just having friends to help you be accountable will be wonderful! I really need that.
I will be doing the Wii Fit, Easy Shaper (Tony Little) and walking/jogging. I really can’t do alot of walking/jogging because of the impact. Because of previous injuries to both my feet, I’m supposed to limit the impact I put on them. I tried to do circuit training for 10 days and I thoughtI was going to die! So, back to the slow and easy way for now! I’m hoping when I lose more weight, I might be able to try it again.
If you need help blogging, I would help out occassionally too. Just let me know!

I love all the ideas that have been posted so far. I think if you took a donation that you could do many different prizes. I make jewelry, and would be happy to donate a piece or two for the contest. Maybe you could get other businesses to do the same?

I think friendly competitions are great for motivation. If there’s fees or prizes, it’s harder to track honesty. If it’s just posting the winners name, or highlighting them, or seeing if Kristie will mention their name on her show?? Measurements are the best way to gauge progress because if you’re doing it right, you will lose inches.
Some other exercises may include, cycling, swimming as well as the new hit P90X. If you’re doing the P90X properly than results will be obvious in a before and after photo.
Maybe totally everyone’s distance and tracking it on a map, see how far we can all travel, everyone adding to the distance and seeing it constantly moving can be exciting as we reach a goal together as a united team as well as individual goals.

It’s all about calorie burn… use the charts it takes in account your weight and how hard and long you work out. or calories burned. FYI The gym equip without heart rate monitors aren’t very acurate.

Hey there Phittermaster…our Walk Across America 1st PLACE WINNER! It’s great to hear from you again!

You’re so right about the charts! I’m finding even the equipment with heart rate monitors aren’t all the same. I think my gym needs to maintenance some of their equipment! …but I figure they’re all close enough so the data can’t be too far off.

I love this idea too….I hope you include the wii fit or wii biggest looser on your workouts..that seems to work best for me! I think that if we do before and after pics…it should show how well we are all doing! I myself do not care about prizes…I just love the competion between chubby buddies!!!!

I like the 100hours of phitness idea. I’m assuming this will be month long, so 100 is pretty high target for most. We just have to keep it simple, since not everyone has access to same equipment. Perhaps we do miles/steps, that can be from walking, treadmill, etc. Then some for hours on WiiFit/P90X(or whatever it is), not sure we can specify which activity, just perhaps using a game type device or DVD. No, the more I think about it – should be time only. How else will we compare miles/steps to things like hours on abs machine.

Okay, I vote for 100 hours.

Personally, don’t want to get prizes involved, I’m really trying to do these things for my own good, as opposed to someone dangling a carrot in front of my nose. That’s part of MY lifestyle change though, since food has always been a reward, and I’m trying so hard to change that mentality.

But, as always, I’ll go with the flow. If the rest of our pholks prefer a prize system, I’ll still be in.

1. I like the idea of being able to track exercise. I wish we could store it on our daily food intake.
Amount of exercise coupled by food log should demonstrate weight reduction. All this would be on an honour system naturally. Downfall is that non members don’t have access to the food log sheet right?
2. I am not ‘in’ for charging a fee since I am a registered member of OL I pay a monthly fee – unless you want to make it a benefit of membership and charge a small fee to non members?
3. I do like the idea of prizes. Day at a local spa would be heaven! A trip down to see you would be fun. Who ever the 1st place person is could be weighed on arrival to verify his/her reportings. I also hear alot about wii fit and a one stepper (exercise equipment).
4. I already try to add ideas/motivation like many other members also do.
5. This support system 24/7 is proving to be especially helpful to me in being able to be accountable to myself. I am amazed that cognitively it is so much easier for me to watch what I put in my mouth since I have to come to the puter and record it.

Wii Fit
Walk! Walk! Walk!
Zumba! dance party DVDs & Yoga Booty Ballet DVDs are some of my absolute favorites!
Could we maybe figure out a way to have a web based dance party? Like, the host gets a webcam and some great music and just laugh and have fun together?

Discovered this from your recent Facebook post and think it’s a great idea. My 15-year-old daughter and I have just been getting started on a spring walking and weight training regime to add to winter yoga, so we’d have fun participating in your group. I’ll do the sign-up today. If you still want guest bloggers, I’d love to make a comment or two once in a while!
